The Open Resource Centre for Assessments (ORCA) is an innovative service at UBC so there will often be active research projects where faculty members will be conducting education research on various types of data that is available from students writing assessments in ORCA. On this page, we will list all currently active research projects, as well as processes to opt-out, or opt-in to the studies.
Active Studies
Exploring the opportunities, benefits, and challenges of a CBTF
As part of evaluating the impact of integrating a Computer-Based Testing Facility (CBTF) in a course, we will be using your data in our study. The data that may be used includes metadata about your activity on PrairieTest/PrairieLearn (e.g., when you made a reservation, whether you changed your reservation, how long you took to complete an assessment etc.) and data about the assessments you took in the CBTF (e.g., how you performed on an assessment, the answers that were saved on PrairieLearn etc.).
Your data will be de-identified prior to storage on a UBC approved service and the linkage file will be encrypted. Only the Principal Investigator (PI), Firas Moosvi, will know the password to decrypt the file.
Findings from this study may be published, included in a graduate thesis or published in a journal or article. De-identified data (i.e., data that has had the identifiers removed/elided) will be treated as open science data and may be made public as part of publications of the results.
Participation in the study has no impact on any CPSC classes you have taken, are currently taking or will take in the future.
If you wish to opt out of this study for all data that has been collected up to this point in time, please complete this form and all of your data (past and future) will be removed from this study.
Exploring the opportunities, benefits, and challenges of a CBTF
Computer-based testing facilities (CBTFs) are computer labs where students can take exams or complete assessments. This study focuses on how faculty members decide to use a CBTF, the reasons that they use a CBTF, and the types of pedagogical choices that are influenced and impacted by a CBTF.
